Rotherham District Civic Society
Protecting and preserving all that is best in the heritage of Rotherham
What We Do
  • We organise regular meetings on topical issues;
  • We arrange a programme of social events and visits to places of interest;
  • We award a trophy every two years for architectural treatment of a new building or refurbishment
  • We are invited by the local planning authority to comment on proposed alterations to historic building;

We campaign vigorously in support of the principles in which we believe.
Sometimes we win.

For example we saved the Imperial Buildings from the threat of demolition through arranging for it to be "listed".

We campaigned against the proposal to put a huge commercial leisure complex on Herringthorpe Playing Fields and were very pleased when the Council took notice of our suggestion of an alternative source of funding for the improvement of the Leisure Centre.

We made a series of positive contributions to the council's Unitary Development Plan.

But we have been trying unsuccessfully for many years to secure the restoration of the 500-year-old Three Cranes Inn at High Street, the oldest secular building in the town centre.
We shall keep on trying.
