The First Blue Plaques
September the 23rd, 2012

The Rotherham District Civic Society launched its blue plaque scheme at Firbeck Village Hall on September 15th 2012.  Two plaques were unveiled, celebrating the lives of Major General Anthony St Leger and Hewett Cottrell Watson, who had lived in the village.  We were fortunate to have an excellent organisation, the Friends of Firbeck Hall, to work with on the unveiling.  Frankie Dettori, the jockey and Ian Bonner, President of the Botanical Society of the British Isles, were good enough to do the official business and say a few words.

This Society will now be developing its scheme by placing four plaques on High Street, Rotherham.  These will celebrate Rose Heseltine, John Mason, Thomas Badger and the Three Cranes Inn.  We are keen to make links with people or organisations who would like to support our work or who have suggestions about future plaques.
